PENCIL CASE

I made this pencil case using a foil balloon I found on Brighton beach. I was shocked by the amount of foil balloons i came across on my beach cleans i managed to find 3 washed up , 2 within 10 metres of each other. Foil balloons dont biodegrade as their made from mylar plastic  (the film you get on microwaveable meals) and aluminium coating. Sea creatures often mistake balloons for jellyfish and end up ingesting the balloons which their stomachs cant breakdown- leading to slow painful deaths. It is because of this that i was determined to find something to do with the balloons. Mylar is a tricky material, I managed to heat press two layers toegther but anyhting beyond that wouldnt stick. I also tried sewing the plastic but this just made it delicate. In the end I used superglue to seal it, which seemed to work pretty well. I also used straws to make the decorative fish that float in between the layers of mylar, as straws are another big threat to sea life.
